FAMOUS GAMBLING MURDER
Posted by: Gordon Weare (ID *****6740) Date: May 07, 2008 at 01:20:46

Until Jack-The-Ripper arrived, the crime that raved most thru the Victorian era was - The Elstree Murder. Solicitor and gambler William Weare, was shot with a percussion pistol ( a fizzer)then battered to death by John Thurtell in late 1823. Thurtell was hanged in public in January 9th, 1824. There is plenty written on this, all the details imaginable. Even the great writers, including Dickens, used snippets of this event to write of. The latest book is printed by the University of Louisianna ?
