I have been vaccinated twice but didn't take and enoculated twice for fever that didn't hurt me very much, but it sure did make some of them sick.
Nora, we eat and mess around like a bunch of hogs.
It would be a fair sight for you to see ways of living. It may suit some people but it don't me.I hawled all day last Sunday. We moved Sat. and didnt get through, so finished on Sun.While you was at church I thought of it.
Maud fixed up a furlow blank and sent it to me and I turned it in to our Commander but don't know yet what they will do about it there are several to sign it before it will do me any good. But have hopes of getting back before Spring any way.
What does Joephine do now, do you and her quarrel as much as ever?
Well, Nora, it would take me along time to write you every thing so I will close and tell it to you when I see you.
I have to write to Maud often you know so you all see her.Hoping to see you all soon.
Your Bro,
Clarence
The following is a letter from Nora Bell to Clarence..Oct. 4, 1918, Wingo, KY, Mr. Clarence Weaks, Louisville, KY, Dear Brother, If I can stay awake long enough, will write you a few lines tonight.
I have been over at Mama's today, picking peas in Willie's patch. He finished mowing them this afternoon.Mama, Lois, Earl, and myself, all picked until he got them cut down.I picked three sacks full.
They finished putting in Leonard's tobacco this morning, which winds up the tobacco cutting for this year.
Leonard had 2300 sticks.Ira had only 300.
We will sure get rich off of tobacco this time.I spent the day yesterday at Earl's.She had to cook dinner for them, and we finished out her quilt.
I have not seen Maud since Sunday. We went back to the tent meeting at Water Valley, Tuesday night and saw Robert Pewitt. He had just come in that morning and I supposed went right to cutting tobacco as he was with a crew of hands.
We have heard that Clossie Hawks died of Spanish Influenze in camp in California. Are there any cases of that disease near you?I am sending a clipping from the Star, about it that might be of benefit to you.
Clarence, practice deep breathing regularly. That probably would prevent you from taking it.There are a good many colds around here.Josephine is hoarse tonight and has a cold in the head.I have taken cold also.Ira has been cutting and hauling his sorghum today.Mr. Forester is going to make it, and the mill is at Henry Campbell's.They began making this p.m.
I must tell you something funny.Mr. Forester was up here a few days ago to see about making, and I asked him about Lester. He said that Lester belongs to the Medical "choir", (of course, he meant corps) and studies three hours a day, learning to write prescriptions and etc.He said that he is an officer, a "medical lieutenant," and said "they say it's next to the Captain."HA! HA! Don't you wish you were as important as that?
I read your letter at Mama's today.Yes, things are pretty favorable for the Allies now, and I hope this dreadful war will be brought to a speedy end.
I got some facts and figures through the mail, today, about our army that might interest you. Will send it.
We raised just about half of our quota in the Liberty Bonds.I mean in this district.
Well, I must quit and go to bed.Ira wants to get up early in the morning.
Take good care of yourself, and write to us often,
Your Sister, Nora

A letter written to Rose Feland Weaks from Joseph Weaks, Murray, KY, June 30, 1934.
Dear Aunt Rose and family,
Wingo, Kentucky.
I am very sorry that I was away at the time Uncle John died, I did not learn of his death until about the time he was buried.I went to St. Louis Wednesday night and got home at 12 o'clock Friday and Myrtle advised me of the phone message and having driven from St. Louis that morning I did not feel like I could get there.I had heard that Uncle John was sick sometime ago, but had not heard anything lately.
Of course, it is a shock to all of us when our relations pass away but yet we know not the time, but know it comes to all of us sometime.
I know all of us feel a great loss, no one knows how to sympathize with others in the loss of their parent until the shock comes to us, as I have never lost my companion I know I can not realize it like you do when it comes.I never realized the loss of a father until I lost my father and he past away almost 21 years ago, it seemed to me that he went at least 15 years before his time, we can not know anything about this.I can look back when I was a child and father was a strong man at log-rollings, father and uncle John were considered the strongest men, mother was almost an invalid, yet she has been spared to us already 21 years longer than father, but all we can do is submit to Him who does all things right and take consolation in the fact that they are at rest, that we can go to them but we would not want them to return to us.
Give my love and sympathy to yourself and all the family,
Your devoted Nephew,
Jos H. Weaks
