2 (of 3) Wayne fams in GA 1790-1800's
While trying to dig up the dirt on William Wayne (?patriarch of the Baptist Waynes of Cherokee Co.), I decided to see what some of my sources said concerning the WAYNEs from Chatham Co. and see whether somehow they connect with the Cherokee Co. WAYNEs. Most of this info may be old hat to some of you, but I would like to get some feedback nevertheless as to its accuracy. The following notes are from early Newspaper clippings, Deed and Will abstracts.
The first family is the easiest.
Maj. Gen. "Mad" Anthony WAYNE had a will probated in Chatham county which stated he had only 2 children: Isaac (student-at-law) and Margaretta (who married William R. ATLEE. No further research conducted as Isaac returned to PA and ATLEE is a whole other line.
Family #2 (Chatham Co.).
The patriarch is Richard WAYNE (b. ~1741, d. 10 Jul 1809, 68 yrs). Apparently, Richard came to the Carolinas from Yorkshire, England (I believe bonded as per one deed I read, but not sure what the language really means.) He was a merchant and planter. His arrival to the Carolinas was sometime before 3 Nov 1767, but the exact date I don't know yet. {Someone want to look that one up?} Apparently he was a merchant in Yorkshire before his immigration, but I can't confirm that with the sources I have in hand. On 14 Sep 1769, he married Elizabeth CLIFFORD, a widow/spinster, in Charleston. She had a brother, Charles, and a mother Elizebeth (sometimes referred to as the Elder) that she survived. Elizabeth (CLIFFORD) WAYNE died 10 Oct 1801 in Chatham Co., GA. I have no birthdate for her.
One source states that Richard transplanted to GA in 1790. I have no way to confirm this with these sources, but I do know that he was in Chatham Co. at least by 6 Nov 1794, as one of the marriage announcements of one of his daughters was listed. Now Richard and Elizabeth (CLIFFORD) WAYNE had at least 5 children. 4 of them are listed in his will, while a fifth (and maybe a sixth) is alluded to in a death announcement and in the will through the mentioning of his children. The children are as follows: James Moore, William Clifford, Elizabeth Clifford, and Mary. The 5th mystery child is, I believe, Richard, Jr.
There is scant information concerning James Moore WAYNE in the deed abstracts save by way of mention. The same is true of William Clifford WAYNE. However, the husbands and children as well as father in laws of the remaining 3 children are mentioned throughout the will and newspaper excerpts.
Elizabeth Clifford WAYNE married George ANDERSON, son of Capt. George ANDERSON (dec'd), on 6 Nov 1794. They had at least 4 children by Jul 1809: George Wayne, John Wayne, James William, and Elizabeth Mary.
Mary WAYNE married R.M. STITES (atty-at-law) on 10 Jun 1801. He died 26 Feb 1811. Their three children (as of Jul 1809) were Elizabeth Clifford, Richard Wayne, and Sarah Anderson.
The fifth child, Richard E. WAYNE, Jr. (the mystery child from above) married Juliana SMYTHE, daughter of Maj. ____ SMYTHE on the Thursday before 6 Feb 1800. Juliana died 14 Apr 1807.
One of Richard's sons died 9 Dec 1796 in Chatham Co. I do not know which one.
Lastly, while searching through the deeds of SC, I found a freed slave listed as a neighbor to a property owned by Richard WAYNE. His name was Matt R. WAYNE. This particular abstract is listed as pp. 51-53 in Book Z-5 of the SC Deed Abstracts.
Now none of this information neither confirms nor excuses that this family is connected to the Cherokee Co. WAYNEs, but I hope someone finds this information useful.
As always, I implore all researchers to post any information you might gather as it helps us all out when you share. Sometimes we get nervous about sharing our data as we might feel it is incorrect, butthe fact is the more that people share the more clearly the answers come. Personally I would rather be corrected or pointed in the right direction so that I might know who my ancestors are instead of just thinking it might be right. Besides, you never know when something you find will open up a whole new branch on the tree. OK, end of rant.
Anyone figure out the pedigree of Kindness Breedlove LIGHT, yet (see earlier posts of mine)?
Oh yes, one more this... directed to the Totzke's... I remember a post you all had a long time ago with a mention of a Winyan County or District or something in SC. I have search through about a dozen sources and have been unable to find this place. I've even checked in NC. Do you happen to know which source it was that mentioned this place? Or have I gotten it all wrong?
Thanks,
Chad (7 generations of WAYNEs so far... maybe more...)
