I always assumed that "waxler" is an Ellis Island creation, and that the original name might have been wechsler or wexler, etc. However, seeing your message I wonder if it's possible that waxler was the original name.

My grandfather arrived in Philadelphia from western Russia sometime near the beginning of the century. God only knows how we would ever establish a connection.
