I agree, the timeline is problematic. Also, the "traditional" date suggested for the birth of the eldest sons is also problematic, as I have never seen any reliable source for this. The timeline for the wife of Henry Meese's wife is also problematic, in the same way for Waugh's supposed "wife". There appears to be an extra generation added.
I have tried to discuss this with the author, but haven't been able to schedule a face-to-face. Emailing this situation has not been very efficient for resolving some of this. I asked the author where he got the info that Joseph and John Jr. were of Native American descent, and he replied that he got this from the notes of George H. King, whose writings are in the VA History Museum in Richmond. Where King got that info, I don't know.
However, I am equally troubled by the assumption that because he married, thirdly, Christian Martin, that his first "wife" and mother of his oldest children was Christian's sister, based solely on customary Native traditions.
Others have suggested that Waugh's Native wife was a daughter of Meese, named Frances. However, I have read a convincing analysis that it couldn't have been Frances, but the analysis didn't rule out an older unknown daughter.
In any event, I don't think anyone should look at this article as fact. However, it appears to be an interesting first start at brainstorming possible scenarios based on a large collection of oral family traditions combined with new information.
