Hi Hershel, My great-grandmother,Susan Annie SPEARS SHEPPARD BARNES, always told my Dad she was 'Dutch,Irish,Indian' (later he said she may have said 'Black Dutch'). My understanding is that 'Black Dutch' could also mean they were Indian. She was born in Randolph Co,Al between 1851-1853. There are so few records for that county because of the courthouse being burned. I have only had census and land records to research. But I believe her father was Jeremiah SHEPPARD(b.1800 NC-maybe Richmond Co,near Chesterfield Co,SC)) and her mother was Jane ____(b.1810 SC). I believe Jane was first married to a Daniel J. or Joshua J.SPEARS,probably in Coweta Co,Ga about 1832. I found a James WATWOOD in Chesterfield Co,SC in 1820 with 4 daughters to age 10. One dau married William BARNES in Coweta Co,Ga in the early 1830's. Another one named Mary may have married M.Daniel SPEARS about 1837. I have corresponded with Ive SPEARS on that line. I could not find James WATWOOD in 1830 anywhere. The SPEARS were in Elbert Co,Ga in 1820 and in Coweta Co,Ga in 1830.The SPEARS and WATWOOD's appear to have moved into Randolph Co,Al about 1837-1838 according to land records. You mentioned on Genforum that Suzan Davis WATWOOD (wife of James Wesley WATWOOD,Jr was Cherokee. Do you have more info on this? I am trying to find if Jane_____ was also a daughter of the James WATWOOD of Chesterfield Co,SC and if her mother was Cherokee. Thanks a lot. Al Ragsdale www.geocities.com/alragsdale
