Thomas Watts - Need Help w/Rock Island CW Prison Bio
Writing short bios (which will be free online access) on Confederate dead at Rock Island Union Prison. Please help identify specific unit and family info on Thomas Watts.
From Rock Island Cemetery Records
Watts, Thomas
Pvt, Co A, Mississippi Battalion
Died at Rock Island: 13 Apr 1864
Confederate Cemetery Grave No. 1039
The "Mississippi Battalion" is not specific enough for me to identify Thomas in the National Park Service Civil War Soldiers Online Database, nor the Footnote.com records of Confederates from Mississippi.
The following (Confederate) Thomas Watts and one listing with initials T.E. appear in NPS Database:
1. Thomas, Pvt, Cos. B&E, 24th MS Cav Regt (Moorman's)
2. Thomas, Pvt, Co A, 14th Regt MS Inf
3. Thomas, Sgt, Co F, 37th Regt MS Inf
4. Thomas H., Pvt, Co B, 1st Bn MS Cav (State Troops)
5. Thomas H., Cpl, Co D, 2nd Regt MS Inf (State Troops)
6. Thomas H./J., Pvt, Co C, 13th Regt MS Inf
7. Thomas J., 1SG, Co I, 35th Regt MS Inf
8. Thomas L., Pvt, Co A, 22nd Regt MS Inf
9. T. E., QM/SGT, Swett's Co, MS Lt Arty (Warren Lt Arty)
In trying to determine correct one (if listed) I have ascertained the following on the above:
1. Was present for duty after death of the right Thomas
2. Found a discharge for disability.Did he re-enter war?
3. Co is different. Rank of SGT.Was he demoted?
4. Co is different, but it is a Bn rather than a Regt?
5. Rank and co different
6. Died in Newton, MS after the War
7. Rank is different, this Thomas was the top SGT.
8. Died in Columbus, MS during the War
9. Rank is different, it's arty, its a battery/Co, not Bn
As you can see, I don't have any good prospects in the above group, unless I can determine that one of the listings at Rock Island, NPS, or Footnote service records index are incorrect.
Please help if you can.I am open to suggestions if you are aware of other sources for this search. There are almost 2,000 Confederate soldiers buried at Rock Island.I have worked on this off and on since I was stationed at Rock Island in the 80's and I am now to the "W's.When I finish, It will be posted for all to use freely.Disk and hard copies will be sent to appropriate State Archives.Thanks. -Stan Reed
