Regarding the state of the current Y-DNA testing and the probably descendants of John Watts the Trader/Interpreter, b. abt 1720.
Currently, we have a number of Watts family lines whose Y-DNA matches, most of which were not known to be related prior to Y-DNA testing.
Those matching lines include:
Thomas Watts b. 1722/Tabitha ?? of Kershaw District SC.
Thomas Watts b. bef. 1740 of Wilkes County, GA
Richard Watts b. bef 1750 of Bedford County, VA
None of these lines have any tradition of Native American ancestry.
We have at least three matches to the Y-DNA from families who have a tradition of Cherokee ancestry:
Malachi Watts, b. 1793, believed to be a son of Garrett Z. Watts, b. 1756 and grandson of John Watts, the Interpreter/Trader b. abt. 1720
Henry Watts, b. abt 1760, also believed to be a son of John Watts the Interpreter/Trader.We have Y-DNA from two branches of this family, so this line is becoming quite clear from Henry on down.
Any male, direct descendant of these or related lines can help us define these relationships through Y-DNA testing.
While Y-DNA testing can't determine the exact father to son relationship, when combined with other data Y-DNA testing can confirm such relationships.E.g., Should we get matches from other suspected sons of Garrett Z. Watts, such as Solomon, John, Vincent, Jefferson, etc. it would strengthen the probabilities he is their common ancestor.
A similar process can verify what we think we know of John Watts, the Interpreter/Trader's lines.
Note that Y-DNA testing of this line can't determine Native American Ancestry since John Watts, the Interpreter/Trader was of British (prob. Scottish, stock). To determine Native American Ancestry for this line, we'd need direct all female lines from John Watts' Native American wife. This, of course, will require a lot of genealogical research to establish reasonable candidates.
At this point, we don't know the common ancestor of the above listed family lines. As some of us expand our DNA test from 12 to 37 points, the closeness of the relationships may become clearer.
For more information on this particular match sets of the Watts Y-DNA project, contact me.For more general question, or to order a kit at the group rate, contact Duane.Duane has taken the job of corrdinating the Watts Y-DNA project, and we are all grateful to him for his efforts.
