I have been told that the Malachi Watts family actually applied for membership in the Cherokee tribe and were rejected.I don't know the basis for their claim, nor to I know the basis for their rejection.
We already have a representative of the Malachi family line in the database, and the DNA matches to several other Watts family lines, indicating membership in a truly "old" Watts family.
I know that the current members of the Malachi family believe themselves to be the heirs of the Cherokee Watts line, but unfortunately there's nothing to go on except their belief and their family legends.I suppose that if I were to get a registered member of the tribe to test for us, strictly speaking I wouldn't still have absolute proof -- the level of proof is entirely dependent on the degree to which we accept that the officials who granted the registered family's membership knew themselves that they were granting membership to the "actual" family.
But I can't think of anything better.
