I am searching for early records of John who in 1804, aged just 14, at Port Jackson (Aus) signed on to the crew of the Royal Navy ship Calcutta as a Boy 2nd Class. After nearly 9 years imprisoned in France as a POW he completed his Lieutenant's rating in 1818. He says he was born in Portsmouth but I haven't been able to find a baptism so I'm thinking that there may have been a maritime connection or that the family came out to the young colony in some kind of visiting official capacity. However if anyone knows of a Watt family living in Port Jackson so early it might disprove that theory. John did not return to Australia, he married in London in 1820 and they went to live in France until his death in 1842. His daughter migrated to SA in 1851. I hope someone has some information or suggestions for further research. Thanks Di Notify Administrator about this message?
