Greetings Fellow Watson Researchers

More grist for the mill.

What follows establishes what I believe is a solid, non-biological link between the Richard Pleasant Watson family of Virginia and John Watson of Todd County, KY. John Watson was born in 1797 and married Martha Ann Anderson in Todd County in 1824.

Richard Pleasants Watson is thought to be the son of William Watson (of Charles City, Virginia) and Martha “Patty” Pleasants.

Richard married Susan Price on 24 March 1802 in Virginia. Richard and Susan had four children (Lucinda, William, Annleona, and James) before Susan died around 1809.

After Susan’s death, Richard married Ann Meriwether Anderson on 5 June 1809 in Albermarle, Virginia. Richard died in 1812, and Ann Meriwether Anderson subsequently married Dr. Lewis Carr of “North Garden.” (This information is documented in “Anderson-Overton Genealogy” by W.P. Anderson, page 294.)

Ann Meriwether Anderson was the daughter of Ann Meriwether and Richard Anderson. Her brother was Nicholas Meriwether Anderson, and Nicholas died in Todd County, KY in 1824, leaving three underage children in the guardianship of his first cousin, John Smith Anderson. John Smith Anderson was also a first cousin to Ann Meriwether Anderson, widow of Richard Pleasants Watson.

If one assumes that Ann Merriwether Anderson kept Richard Pleasant Watson's children after Richard’s death, the children of Richard Pleasants Watson were raised as nephews of Nicholas Meriwether Anderson and as first cousins of Nicholas Meriwther Anderson’s children. When Nicholas Meriwether Anderson’s underage children became the guardians of John Smith Anderson, the natural children of John Smith Anderson also acquired this non-biological “first cousin” relationship with the children of Richard Pleasants Watson. All of these relationships would have developed before 1817, when John Smith Anderson and his family moved to what is now Todd County, KY.

The eldest daughter of John Smith Anderson, Martha Ann Anderson, married John Watson in Todd County, KY in 1824. It seems reasonable to believe that this John Watson may have been a nephew of Richard Pleasants Watson, though there is no proof of this.

If anyone has any additional information on the descendants of William Watson and Martha “Patty” Pleasants, I would be delighted to receive it. Also, I will be happy to answer any questions that anyone has concerning the information in this correspondence.

Steve Watson
