Mary, Sarah Davis Watkins was born in 1775 in VA to Jacob Davis & Phyllis (LNU). Sarah had probably two siblings (Philip Davis 1782 - 1830) and Abner (little is known of him). Sometime prior to 1797, the Davis family came to what is today the extreme southeastern portion of Rutherford County. They settled along the Sucke Creek area. Their farm lands spread over into the Spartenburg District of SC and at times their 2 story chestnut log home would fall within the S.C. jurisdiction (the state line shifted). Both the Rutherford (NC) and the
Spartenburg (S.C.) county records mention the Watkins and the Davis. The Watkins Cemetery is about a mile west of the Davis Cemetery. The families, as well as the Amos, Blackwell, were good friends. They were all active in the State Line Baptist Church (Gaffney, S.C. address), but the church's current location is only about 2 1/2 miles from the old Davis and Watkins plantations. The church was established by them in 1794 and is still a very active church. I was up there week before last.
