To my knowledge, there are two Leonard/Lenard Wathen/ Warthens in Montgomery Co.
The first one is of interest to you: Lenard Warthen/Wathen, b. ca. 1795 (possibly 4 April 1795), d. Dec. 1846 or Jan. 1847 in Montgomery Co. m. Oct. 27, 1821 Mary Bentonn, widow of William Magruder Claggett. Lenard bought, or leased, 124 acres of "Clear Drinking" on the main road to Baltimore on Feb. 14, 1812 (Mont. Co. Land Lib. WK, fol. 321) he mortgaged a negro boy, James, to John Adamson for $131; James in service of Francis Warthan, on March 18, 1823 (Mont. Co. Land Lib. WK, fol. 326). On July 16, 1828, Lenard borrowed $547.54 from Benjamin S. Benton, the sum needed to settle the estate of Mary's (first) husband's land. Mary's children were underage. Lenard and Mary were to hold the estate, "Pleasant Plains of Damascus." he repaid the mortgage Sept. 15, 1834, and received the land and property back (Mont. Co Land Lib. WK, fol. 327).
This Lenard seems to be the Lenard mentioned in the Bible of Ignatius Warthen (#90 - National QArchives). Children listed are: George, Jan. 30, 1791; Elizbeth, April 9, 1792; Francis, Dec. 29, 1793; Lenard, April 4, 1795; William, Jan. 14, 1797; Ann Matilda, April 30, 1800; Ignatius, Feb. 23, 1803; Mary, Nov. 21, 1805; Joseph, Feb. 24, 1809 and James W., Dec. 30, (1803?) William, incidentally, married Dec. 5, 1829 Sarah Benton Claggett, widow of Samuel Magruder Claggett.
The other Leonard, born ca. 1739 in Charles Co., m. Ann Mattingly, dau. of William Mattingly of St. mary's Co. in 1760, and moved to Montgomery Co. 1775. Leonard died May of 1782 (Original Wills, Box 1, rol. 66) The inventory of 13 April 1791 gives the final account (Mont. Co. Inv. Bk 1797-1802, p. 98-99)He and Ann lived on "Constable Range", "Addition to Constable Range" and "Conclusion," which he bought in 1778 for 400 lbs. current money (Mont. Co. Land Lib A, fol. 419; also Lib. 2, fol. 399) Their children: Barton, 1760-1834, m. 2) Ann Morris Chandler; Gabriel, 1763-1837, m. Susan Whittier; Henry Ambrose, 1765-1806, m. 2) Behetheland Chandler; Monaca, ca. 1767-; Anastasia, ca. 1770, m. John B. Thompson; Benedict H., 1775-1824, m. 2) Ann Hay); Wilfred, 1776-1807, m. Elizbeth Chandler. Barton and Gabriel stayed in Montgomery Co. - the rest went to Kentucky. I can't help feeling that there is a connection between this Leonard and your Lenard -- the names are just too similar. Leonard (1738-1781) was the son of Ignatius Wathen -- whose 3 oldest son's families have not been totally determined yet......they seemed to have moved to St. Mary's Co. and the remaining records don't mention them. I note that you say "Waring" -- Ignatiu's oldes son was Waring Wathen -- outside of the fact that he was the billed for a debt owed the estate of James Mills in 1764, and was mentioned as Waring in his father's will, nothing else is known.
Hope this helps.........
