Great-Great Grandfather from Germany

One of the other questions that I still have is how my great-great grandfather get over here from Germany?

Fact: He's 14 years old when he turns up in America in the 1850 Census.

Fact: He is listed as living in a boarding house WITHOUT his parents.

I've just received word from Germany that there is the possibility that I have found his family of origin in Wissentrup, Germany because there was a son listed as: Friedrich Wilhelm WATERHOLTER (spelled with an umlaut), born October 6, 1835. He may have been confirmed in his church in 1849. This family was STILL living in Wissentrup, Germany in 1852.

Since no Certificate of Emmigration was issued, could he have run away from home and stowed away aboard one of the ships to America in 1849?

Still wondering.
