The first settlement was made in 1805 or ‘6, by Samuel Bristol, who came in from DePeyster, where he was one of the first settlers, located on the old State road, upon the place now owned by Samuel Honeycomb.Captain Rufus Washburn came in, it is believed, soon after, from DePeyster, where he had resided five years. He settled upon the place now owned by David Pierce. He was formerly from Connecticut, but moved into this county from Exeter, Otsego county, and resided at Ogdensburg, the first summer of his settlement. He was a blacksmith, and for many years kept a public house, the first in the town.He was drowned in the Oswegatchie, April 28, 1817, after his canoe overturned while returning from a town meeting in the village of Gouverneur.Months later, his body was found about three miles down the river lodged in an old tree top.
According to the “History of Macomb Census” by Macomb Town Historian, Mrs. India Murton: After the opening of the first State Road in this section, a part of which crosses macomb, this road was know for a century or more as “The Old State Road” the first settlers came into our town. In 1806 the second pioneer Rufus Washburn settled where Pierce’s Corners now is, and the place was called Washburnville. On or around 7 June 1842, the postmaster has declared that the P.O. at Washburnville shall be renamed “Macomb”
