December 9th 1773
The Session met according to appointment. Allen McKnight and John Anderson. William Reasons for his absence last session, sustained.
Catherine Moreland complains that Jane Christie represented her as being too familiar at the last court, and also that she was guilty of theft.
Elizabeth Moreland being Duly Sworn; that she heard Jane Christie say that a strange man came to Robert Warrick and asked him where Catherine Moreland was and sd. Warwick said, that he did not know. But looking about after some time said, he saw Catherine Moreland and a young man laying by the fence in an unbecoming manner & sd. Warrick told Jean to watch her Eye. – Elizabeth Moreland.Asked if Jane Christie did not say that? Said, Warrick told her what is related above, saith more she doth not remember.
Eve Warrick being Duly Sworn. Sayth, that she heard Jane Christy say that John, her husband, said that Catherine Moreland went about {missing}, John Christy {missing}
Ginger Bread, and further saith that her Husband - –ohed that he would not take care of her bread another night.Eve Warrick being asked what she understood by Catherine Moreland’s Idleness, saith that she understood that sd. Moreland was familiar with a man or men besides her Husband.
Rebecca Hindmon being Duly Sworn; saith that she heard Eve Warrick say that Captain Phillip Yancey came to William Hindmon & asked for Catherine Moreland, said he would have his will of her, in as Vulgar manner as she could express it. Rebecca Hindmon being asked if she heard any such thing, saith that she did not. Said Hindmon that she heard sd. Eve Warrick say --- {missing} Blamed Catherine Moreland for thedifferences that happened between her and Jane Christy. And that sd. Moreland should not represent person’s as thieves, but should remember the Ginger-Bread, or Ginger Bread Dough.
Catherine Moreland and Jane Christie agree that the matter should now be a non issue.
The Session, after Mature Deliberation, judge that Catherine Moreland is not charged with Idleness in that Gross Sense, in whichit was sometimes understood, or of the theft. Nor can we say that Jane Christy is chargeable with Lying.But would recommend it to her, not to use equivocal disparaging remarks such as Idleness & etc.that are capable of being understood in a sense very prejudicial to others.Also would recommend it to each of the parties to be Chaste, keep toyour home, and to be very careful for the future both in your conduct and language, that peace and love hereafter prevail.
