FACT: (a direct quote from someone I talked to about this question at Family Tree DNA)
FACT: Males are eligible for both Y-DNA and mtDNA testing and do not need to order two separate kits to have the two tests performed. Both tests can be run on a single kit for a male's sample.

Y-DNA tests their father's lineage
mtDNA test their mother's lineage
(ONlY MALES can test for both)
