p.s. Mr. Johnson..
I am certain you thought of this already....but when you are checking the Cuy.Co. courthouse for Quigley's original deed "on the Black River"(your quote, not mine)...be sure to check for John S. Reid's original deed ON THE Black River.
Reid of course is another of our heroes who rescued the abandoned soldiers on the Peninsula, and it would be nice to finally know when he truly acquired his land on which his blockhouse on the Black River, stood. Past published histories seem to err in the date that he first acquired the parcel (...perhaps acquired even while the area was still a part of Geauga Co., so perhaps you wont even find Reid's deed in Cuy.Co...however, Quigley's deed should be in Cuy.Co...it will of course mention only a "Range"...it is unlikely that the deed will state "Black River Twp.", which didn't exist in 1810/1811 ).
Reid seems to have petitioned the State to let him build a bridge across the Black River, at a much earlier date than Reid is "historically' attributed to having settled here. It seems logical that if he wanted to build a bridge across the River, that he perhaps at least had some prior property interest on the River.
We of the Firelands anxiously await to see your results posted here to this msg-board, of the two deed searches...Quigley and Reid.
