Bob, The 8th Regiment of U.S. Infantry was raised in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia beginning in 1808 and then the headquarters was moved to Georgia when the 3rd Regiment of U.S. Infantry moved from Georgia to Louisiana-Mississippi at the beginning of the War of 1812. Captain James Dorman, born and lived in Virginia, became a captain in the new 8th regiment that was formed after the war. This is not the same 8th regiment that was raised in 1808. Before then Dorman was a captain in the 34th Regiment of U.S. Infantry. Captain Samuel Riddle, born in Pennsylvania, was originally in the 15th Regiment of U.S. Infantry before being transferred to the new 8th regiment after the war. I could not find a Rothwell serving as an officer in the U.S. Army during the War of 1812. It appears that your relatives may have been assigned to the new 8th Regiment of U.S. Infantry on 3 March 1815 with the merger of the 5th, 18th and 35th Regiments of U.S. Infantries. The 5th was raised in PA, the 18th in SC and the 35th in VA. If your relatives served in the new 8th after this date, then they may been living in PA or VA, possibly SC. All of the army’s infantry regiments merged to form new 1st through 8th infantries. The originally 38th infantry became apart of the new 7th Regiment of U.S. Infantry in 1815. I hope this helps you!
