Nathaniel Avery Shipman 1791-1872

My great-great-great-grandfather, Nathaniel Avery Shipman, was born March 21,1791 in Lyme, Conn. He died in 1872, while visiting his son, John Bogue Shipman, here in Upshur County, West Virginia. He is buried in the Mt. Union Cemetery, and his tombstone indicates he was a veteran of the War of 1812. Yet I have been unable to find any records to verify that. I cannot imagine why his son would have had that ensribed on his tombstone if it weren't true.
Any suggestions from anyone?

Thanks,
