Judy,

Travel time was based on the number of miles between a soldier's discharge location and his home. Therefore, your ancestor was 100 miles from his home when he was discharged. He was given five days pay plus five day of rations so that he could return home.

Most likely the signatures on the pension papers are actually the signatures of the veterans.
