Joe,
The 24th Regiment of US Infantry did not participate in the Battle of Black Rock, however, two companies were captured during the surrender of Fort Niagara on 19 Dec 1813. Detachments of the 12th, 13th, 14th, 20th and 23rd US Infantries were involved in the Battle of Black Rock on 28 Nov 1812.
The 24th Infantry was formed in Tennessee with seven companies serving under General Harrison and three companies serving under General Jackson. Two companies were sent to New York with General Harrison in the fall of 1813 while three companies remained at Fort Detroit and two companies at the Newport Barracks in Kentucky.
Half of the 1st Regiment of US Rifles was formed in Kentucky and Ohio and they too were sent to New York with General Harrison in the fall of 1813. Captain Wadsworth was from Ohio.
You will need to get Buchanan’s service record, pension and land bounty application from the National Archives. From the information that you have, he was regular army and not militia.
On NAFT Form 85 (Military Service Records) mark “regular” for army service in Box 9 (Kind of Service). The National Archives has the consolidated enlistment rosters for all of the U.S. Army regiments that served during the war in book form. This book is called the Records of the Men Enlisted in the U.S. Army Prior to the Peace Establishment, May 17, 1815. This book contains the name and rank of each enlisted personnel, his regiment, his company commander’s name, his regimental commander’s name, a physical description of your ancestor plus his peacetime occupation, where he was born (county and state, or country), where he enlisted and the period of enlistment, and any additional remarks. All of the columns may not be filled in. A page from this book will be sent to you as your ancestor’s service record.
On NAFT Form 86 (Military Pension/Bounty Land Warrant Applications) mark “regular” for army service in Box 8 (Kind of Service).
