Eric, I ordered and received William Wiseman's records. Thank you again for helping me. I could not have found it without you. William Wiseman died before 1847 in Hamilton County, IL so I could not see from "more current" censuses where he was born (he died before the censuses listed pob). All of his children give their father's pob as Ohio so I began my search there but came up empty handed. Then I located his military land grant in IL (Henry County) and located that William served in Capt. Hunter's 8th Regiment of US Infantry. You were the one who gave me a more descriptive service in order to get the records "located" from NARA......Thank YOU! From these records I see William gives his pob as Washington County, MD [I never would have known to research there!]. I must admit I am more confused now, after receiving the records, than before. May I lean on you for guidance once more? In William's records: Place of enlistment: Georgia [yet another state!] Date: 9/8/1812 By whom: Capt. Jones. Period: 5 years. I searched and searched for a Capt. Jones in GA and came up empty handed. I tried the Ga county and state links, ancestry.com, message boards, Google, and Virginia Crilley's site at http://www.rootsweb.com/~gataylor/1812tay.htm Still nothing. Williams records get more interesting but I can't seem to decipher it all: MR: Capt D.E. Twiggs Co., Feb. 28 [I looked high and low for a Capt. Twiggs and came up empty handed once again!] MR: Jun 30, Carpl (spelling?). Oct 30/13 MR: Capt M. Jones Co. Apr. 30 and Jun 30/14, present. [I looked high and low for a Capt. Jones and came up empty handed once again!] Promoted Sergeant Oct 26/13. MR: Aug 31/14, on command at Fort Jackson. DR: Camp Flournay, GA, Mar 9/15, present. IR: [or TR:] Capt. Thomas C. Hunter's Co., Fort Hawkins, Apr 30 and June 30/15, present. [I looked high and low for a Capt. Thomas C. Hunter's Co. and came up empty handed once again!] Discharged from late Capt. Thomas C. Hunter's Co., Aug 21/15, white swelling and general dibility. I could locate "8th US Infantry" in google but it never named any of the above Capt. or places. I could not locate camp Flournay either. What am I doing wrong? Did my William Wiseman companies get re-organized a lot? If so, how do I find out the history of his service? Places and battles fought. What I really want to solidify is his pob [OH or MD] and when and why he removed to GA [I am assuming he relocated to GA since that is where he enlisted/drafted]. Do you know what MR, DR, IR reprsent? If William received a land grant in Henry County, Illinois [as many 1812 veterans did] and William later sold this land, wouldn't that be on record? [this is a great site: http://www.outfitters.com/illinois/history/family/miltract.html]. I searched the BLM webpage to see if any further action was recorded on that parcel and found nothing but the original grant to William in 1818 . I can also locate the land grant at IRAD database [http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/GenealogyMWeb/landsrch.html ] where the land was granted to William for his service but I can not locate any transfer/selling of this parcel of land....go figure....seems to be my luck with this guy....gives me just enough to search a new direction and still end up on a dead-end! Thanks again so much for your assistance. Tina Notify Administrator about this message?
