Gilbert Sutphen - Ingersoll's Co., 23rd NY Inf. Regt.
According to government records I have, my 3-great grandfather Gilbert Sutphen enlisted as a private in Capt. Ingersoll's 23rd Inf. Regt. 23 March 1814 at Cherry Valley, Otsego Co., NY.According to a letter his son received from the Treasury Dept., he served "until the 1st day of February 1815 when he died in the service."Gilbert fought at Lundy's Lane, although a search did not find his name on the muster rolls. His son Charles claimed he died as a result of exposure at this battle, yet the death date is some time after the battle.
Can anyone further connect Gilbert Sutphen to the Niagara campaign, especially where he died and is buried?
Thanks for any help anyone can give.
