Aide for widow of soldier dying W of 1812? (lookup?)
My 22 yr. old ggg-GF, Mahlon Fell, a PA. Vols Ensign in Captain Collin's Company, departed for the War of 1812 from Uniontown the summer of 1812. Mahlon died in 1813 during his service and left behind his wife (Sarah?) and new born baby, Maria.
Help, please - I am confused about a widow's pension/aide. Would Sarah and her baby receive some fairly immediate aide/pension or would mother and child receive no assistance and have to wait until Sarah was of a much older age to file for a pension?
This is my first visit to this forum, and I've seen that some friendly folks out there are doing look-ups for people. I've viewed Mahlon's index card for the PA vols but am interested if a pension application was filed by his wife. If so, the details of the app and knowing the proper agency to contact to purchase the papers would help greatly. (Which agency to contact is confusing since he was militia, and NARA forms 85 and 86 appear to process only military regulars along with branch of service, and militia is not a choice).
Thank you immensely for any help/direction that you are able to provide me!
