DIED -- in this city, on Sunday, 24th inst., Desert, infant daughter of Mr.& Mrs. Charles WARFIELD, aged 2 months.

CASE of DESTITUTION -- Our obituary column today records the death of an infant, in connection with which there are painful circumstances that cannot but draw the tear of sympathy. Instances of disease and destitution are not of rare occurrence in this 'favored land of gold,' but they seldom come under public observation, and the world is therefore pronounced cold-hearted; whereas, they need only to be brought to the knowledge of one truly charitable heart, and relief must follow.

A few months since, Mr. Charles WARFIELD, his wife and 5 children, left Hunt county, Texas, for California, with a band of stock, including several valuable horses. On the Plains misfortune overtook them, their cattle were attacked with disease and died, several of their fine horses suffered the same fate, and they were left in a state of utter destitution. Their property thus lost was valued at $1000.

At Belknapp, Mr. WARFIELD parted from his wife and returned to Texas for the purpose of disposing of his property remaining there, while the wife and family proceeded on to Los Angeles, where they arrived, sick and worn down with the fatigue of travel.

On the Plains, the infant whose death we have recorded, was born. At Los Angeles, the family were the recipients of the charity of their neighbors, by whose assistance they were enabled to obtain a scanty livelihood.

Living in Marysville was a slave who had formerly been the property of the family, but who had purchased his freedom and emigrated to California some 2 years since. To him they applied for aid, and it is scarcely necessary to add that the response was as prompt as it was acceptable. The negro employed every means in his power to obtain the funds with which to go to the relief of those who had been kind to him during his bondage in the old States.

He proceeded to Los Angeles, where he found the family, and having provided for their more urgent necessities, he left for this city, and reached here some 2 weeks since. On his arrival his funds were nearly exhausted; but he again started out determined to test the public charity, and succeeded in obtaining a sufficient amount to provide the family with a house, which he leased on Market street, below Commerce, where the family now reside. He paid the month's rent in advance, amounting to $17.50.

The neighbors provided the family with the necessaries of life, and kindly watched over the infant, until on Sunday, it breathed its last. The landlord, be it said to his discredit, demanded the full measure of his rent with all the obduracy of a Shylock, knowing full well that in so doing he took the very bread from the mouths of a destitute family. The mechanics at the Globe Foundry, learning the circumstances of the case, contributed liberally to the relief of the grief-stricken mother and her children.

Mrs. WARFIELD has obtained the position of teacher in the colored school, but her ill-health, it is feared, will not long permit her to continue in it. Her eldest boy, some 15 years of age, has obtained employment, and provides all in his power for the wants of his mother. The husband has not yet reached here from his return visit to the old home in Texas, and it many be months ere he will be able to rejoice his wife and family in this city, where they design permanently to remain.
