This is really long but here's what I have on the Douglas/Ward family. I apologize for it's length.

Your puzzle is a very interesting one. My knowledge of the Cherokee is that they took the names of those they admired I don't know if Mary Ann Ward was Cherokee or not but I believe she might have been. Many of the Douglas men, I understand, married into the Cherokee Nation.

I have since learned that John Sr.'s father was
Mordecai Douglas b 3-16-1764, d.1-31-1882 (he married Mary "Polly" Siler", see below) and
his father was Alexander Douglas who was born in Cockpen Parish, Scotland in 1707.
I enclose the following:
Hi Carolyn,
-The 1st John Douglas *Sr.) b.3-18-1764 in NC,
(Our great great great grandfather...)
He would have been the father of John Jr
(Our great great grandfather)
who was the father of Jesse Douglas... (Our great grandfather )
Who was the father of Jenny Arvella Douglas Massey
who was our grandmother.
Jenny was the mother of our fathers, Amon, E.A. and Medlin Massey as well as Esther Massey Farmer and Myrtle Massey Dunaway.

John Sr. was the son of Mary "Polly: Siler and Mordecai Mitchell Douglas
These people would have been our great great great great grandparents...

Mary was the daughter of Plikard Dederic Siler (from Germany)
He would have been our great great great great great grandfather...
I believe this is right!
