In viewing transcriptions of the original Lewis and Clark papers, I have found that the spelling of Cpl. Richard Warfington's surname was also "WORBINGTON," one of the most commonly found misspelling of the surname Warbington through the south--i.e.-- Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Texas. It would be interesting to see what spelling of Richard's surname is used on the monument that is in St. Louis, MO. Has anyone seen that?
The dropping of the letter "G" in the surname that occurred in Ohio and Indiana, among descendants of JAMES WARBINGTON (first found in the 1820 Ohio Federal Census) is how we now have the spelling of "WARBINTON" in that portion of the United States. Yet, We still have the "WARBINGTON" spelling of the surname found up in Kansas among desdendants of JACOB B. WARBINGTON, SR.'s eldest son, ELLEMANDER WARBINGTON, SR. There, we have recently learned that marriages into Indian tribes have given us some Native American cousins.
Numerous cousins who spell their surname as "WORBINGTON" live in West Texas who descend from WILLIAM B. WARBINGTON, SR., one of Jacob B.'s sons who left Lauderdale Co., Mississippi and settled in Harrison Co., Texas before 1850.
