Hi Lyn,
Rockbridge Co VA Marriages: Angelina Rowsey & Henry Smith, 2 Mar 1830, d/o Archibald dec'd, minister Andrew B. Davidson, Presbyterian. I can't find them in the 1850 VA census. Although I didn't record "color" in my census transcriptions, I'm sure Mary Ellen Smith was listed as white in all the censuses I've seen - I'm sure I would have noticed otherwise. Yes, she was a servant in her future father-in-law's household in the 1860 census (about 6 mos. before they married), which is presumably how she met her husband. This was a pretty common situation; girls often worked in the households of wealthier neighbors. I also wonder if Henry Smith was related in some way to the Smith line that Stephen Hamilton Wandless's sister Martha Jane married into (George H. Smith b. 1825/1830, s/o William P. Smith & Elsy Amelia Morgan of Bath co). If Mary Ellen was a niece or something by marriage to Stephen Jr., that would make a lot of sense as to why she was in the household - but she could just as easily be unrelated.
