We here in northeast Tarrant County have a Civil War veterans monument in place, and are posting biographies and photographs of the men at our Genweb site. If you can add to the following biographical sketch, or could share any photos you might have of this veteran, his wife, or his home, we’d be happy to have them. Thanks for taking the time to read our query. Mike Patterson, Colleyville, Texas

John F. "Jack" Walton, who lived in the Minter’s Chapel area when the 1910 census was taken, told the census enumerator he was a Confederate veteran. His death certificate records that he was born October 10, 1832 in Jackson County, Alabama, a son of W. W. Walton and Rosa (Sarton?).

Walton married Lucinda Erwin in McMinn Co., Tennessee on July 22 [her obituary says August 22], 1856. When census enumerators found the family in Precinct 10 of Tarrant County in 1900, she said she was born in May, 1828 in Tennessee to two native Tennesseans. Lucinda said she had given birth to six children, only three of whom were still living.

When the 1860 census was taken, the Waltons were living in District 9 of McMinn County. The family is found in 1870 in Kirby’s Mill, Jackson County, Alabama; Mr. Walton’s given name is clearly shown as “Jackson.”

Descendants report that Walton was a soldier in Co. G, 3rd (Lillard’s) Tennessee Infantry.
He enlisted February 22, 1862 at Calhoun, Tennessee, under Capt. Giddens for a term of two years. He was shown absent at Baker’s Creek on a muster roll for the months of May through August, 1863. Oddly, there is a receipt for a $50 bounty in his file which is very clearly signed “John H. Walton.” This receipt says he was a resident of McMinn County, Tennessee, born in Jackson County, Alabama. He was twenty-seven years old, 6”1” tall, had a fair complexion, dark eyes, and black hair. He was a farmer.

They came to Texas in 1884. Their children included Alford (or Alfred) Watson, born in October,1857 and Sarah E. “Sally” Walton, born about 1859, both born in McMinn County, Tennessee; Manda, born about 1862 in Alabama; and Clementine “Climmie” Walton, who was born in Alabama about 1865.

Mrs. Lucinda Walton died on July 21, 1904 at 5 p.m. at her residence in Grapevine. Her death certificate says she was seventy-two years old. She died from the effects of a fall and a fracture, with old age as a contributing cause. Her doctor was W. D. Lipscomb. An obituary for her appeared in the Grapevine Sun on July 23, 1904: “IN MEMORIAM. Mrs. Lucinda Walton, wife of J. F. Walton, was born in McMenn county, Tenn., Sept. 29, 1828. She professed religion at the age of 16 and joined the M. E. Church, south, and was a consistent member of the same until her death, which occurred July 21, 1904. She was married to J. F. Walton, August 22, 1856. She was the mother of six children, three of whom have passed over the river of death. She leaves the other three and a husband to mourn her death, although we feel that our loss is her great gain, for we believe that she has gone to a better world. May her death remind us that we, too, must soon pass over the river of Death, for “in the midst of life we are in death.” Mrs. Walton gave evidence of her acceptance with God, for she said, during her last days on earth, that the Lords was her great stay. “Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord from henceforth they shall rest from their labors and their works do follow them. Mother, dear mother, farewell. A. B. Walton.”

A small note appeared in the Grapevine Sun on April 29, 1905, which may refer to this J. F. Walton: "Mr. J. F. Walton and Mrs. Mary Boling were married Thursday night at the residence of Chas. B. Smith. Bro. Claude B. Smith officiated."

The second Mrs. J. F. Walton died June 15, 1908, and her obituary appeared in the Grapevine Sun on June 20: “On Monday night, June 15th, Mrs. J. F. Walton passed away. She had been in ill health for some time previous to her death. She leaves a husband and three children, other relatives and many friends to mourn her demise. The Sun extends its sympathy to the bereaved ones.”

The death certificate for John Fletcher Walton says he died February 5, 1913 at the residence of W. W. Walton in Grapevine. He had been living at his place of death for two years and three months, and had been in Texas twenty-eight years and nine months. Dr. E. C. Bechtol was the attending physician, and said he died of ININITION and chronic nephritis. He was buried at Grapevine by the Lucas funeral directors. No obituary for Mr. Walton appeared in the Grapevine Sun. There are no readable headstones in any northeast Tarrant County cemetery for Mr. Walton or either of his wives.
