Thanks again. I'd found the 1881 census - must find out if the Dog Inn still exists! - and the christening records are very useful, even if they do throw up another question. I'll have to see if there's anything in the earlier census records to suggest which of the two is the right "John".

Strange that I seem to have publicans and licenced victuallers on so many branches of my family, and my wife's ancestry does as well.
