After reading John Payne’s will, it is possible that Johane Bristow was his sister and she was a widow when she married Anthony. This would mean she was first married to either Anthony’s half-brother or step-brother.
Another possibility (but slight) is that at some time she was married to an unnamed brother of John Payne.
After comparing the wills of John Payne and Alderman William Walthall it is clear that the two families were very close. So close their wills are dated one day apart. William states in his will of 16 Jul 1608, “To Anne Payne, My goddaughter, L10” and “to my brother Paynes, three daughters, Margaret, Mary & Johane, five markes each”. All three are listed in John’s will dated the day after William’s. He also leaves “the children of Robert Bristowe, 40s each” & “To my sister, Johane Dutton, 100 marks”.
It does seem strange that John states, “My cousin Mr Richard Walthall, son of my sister Dutton”, and not “my nephew”. This may just be the language of the time and nothing more.
Sorry I have no information on Margaret, dau of Anthony. But I have information that Joane Walthall married Richard Higgens on 25 Jun 1589 (Richard Higgens, of St Swithin’s, London, Merchant Taylor, & Joane Walthall, Spr, of Isleworth, Midx, dau of Anthony Walthall, late of City of London, Mercer, decd: Gen. Lic): Allegations for Marriage Licences issued by the Bishop of London, 1520 to 1610., page 179, 1887, London.
This can be found on Google Books. I have nothing on any other marriages at this time.
As to the marriage of William Walthall and Ann Archer, I have never seen any primary documents on the marriage. The best we can say at this time is that, “by tradition William was married to Ann Archer.”
