Cary James was son of William and Sarah James. William James died in Brunswick Co, VA in 1815. He was survived by his wife, Sarah.

Their children as named in the Chancery Court records (1816-063) of Brunswick Co, VA were: Cary, Thomas, William, Anderson, and Allen James, Nancy R Philips and two daughters who were deceased, Martha James who had married Francis Hancock (she was survived by a daughter, Caroline M Hancock) and Mary (Polly) James who had married John Walpole (she was survived by one son, James A Walpole).

Cary's mother Sarah James died in Rutherford Co, TN in 1818; her estate settlement is in Rutherford Co, TN in Record Book, 4 at page 154.

It seems that all of William and Sarah James's children moved to Rutherford Co, TN including their sons-in-law Francis Hancock and John Walpole.

Cary Walpole, who died in 1848, named his wife, Martha, and seven children in his will, and he named his brother Allen as executor. The children named were William N., Benjamin C.(deceased), Allen W. Elizabeth L Williamson, Rebecca H Lewis (she had previously been married to a Walpole), Nancy T Wallace, and Mary B Goodrich.

William N James of Adams Co, IL sold his share of the estate to his brother Allen W James. In this document William named his parents as Cary and Martha.

Rebecca H James had married William E Walpole in Rutherford Co, TN 02 Dec 1823. William Walpole is listed in Elkhorn, Montgomery Co, MO in 1830, where he is listed with one male 20-30, one male under 5 one female 20-30, one female 5-10 and one female under 5. It seems that William Walpole died after this census and before the birth of Thomas Green Lewis who was born about 1833. Thomas Green Lewis was son of Fielding Lewis and Rebecca Walpole. Like her, Fielding was a widow with several children when he married Rebecca. Rebecca James Walpole Lewis was still living in Montgomery Co, MO in 1880. The records of Montgomery Co, MO were destroyed.

As for the parents of Martha Walpole who was the wife of Cary James, they were likely Thomas Walpole and his first wife. Both of his wives seemed to have been Harrisons, his second wife Elizabeth survived him and lived with her children in Northampton Co, NC.

I would be very interested in exchanging information with anyone on these Families.
