I've been reading the discussion regarding James Johnston and Lady Nancy Walpole with great interest. My wife is descended from Sarah Johnston and her second husband, Henry Gordon.
From what I can find, the Johnston family originally was from Scotland as were the Gordon's. Many of the settlers in Atrim Township came from Scotland by way of Northern Ireland. James could have been born in Northern Ireland and educated in England.
One problem with the James buried in Franklin County is that his will makes no mention of a daughter Sarah. It does mention his wife Elizabeth; sons James, Thomas, John and Robert; and daughters Mary, Elizabeth and Martha, all under 18 at the time the will was written. But no Sarah.
You indicate that these children were by his second wife, Elizabeth Brown Findley. Do you have any information as to what happened to Lady Nancy?
It does complicate things when the Johnston's keep marrying other Johnston's! Everybody does seem to agree that Sarah first married her cousin Thomas.
