Your posting was so interesting to me – and not just because of the great information that you sent. I am very interested in Gabriel’s family because of its intersection with another Walling family.
I am researching the family of a John Walling (b abt 1764) who married a Hulda ____ . They lived in Sussex County NJ in the 1790s. I have never been able to find this family in the 1800 or 1810 censuses – it is likely that they were still in NJ in 1800 which would explain the absence of that census record. They may or may not have been in NJ in 1810. John & Hulda had six sons and by 1820 the entire family was in Ashtabula County OH. In the 1830s, three of these sons (John, Peter, Lewis) went to Fulton County, IL where they lived until they died during the period 1878-1885.
The connection is probably obvious to you. Gabriel Walling & Lucy married in Sussex County NJ in 1808 and by 1830 were also in Fulton County, IL. Moreover, the Buffum family was also in Ashtabula County, OH and Gabriel Walling had a child and grandchild who married into that family.
Have you ever heard of a connection between the family of John Walling & Gabriel Walling.?
Do you know if Gabriel & Lucy Walling ever spent any time in Ashtabula County?
Do you know why Gabriel left NJ and went to OH?
And most important, do you know what led the family to go to Fulton County, IL?
I went to Fulton County IL on a genealogy expedition and had an interesting time but I could never figure out specifically WHY John Walling’s three sons decided to go there.
