Starting Sept. 5, 2014, Genealogy.com will be making a big change. GenForum
message boards, Family Tree Maker homepages, and the most popular articles
will be preserved in a read-only format, while several other features will
no longer be available, including member subscriptions and the Shop.
I wholeheartedly agree with you about paying a fee for a site that provides no material benefit to its "paid membership". The benefits that we receive from this site are from individuals who are seeking clues or sharing clues about our ancestors. To do the proper research, we still have to obtain documents from public records or other reputable resources. I have found several errors in "paid membership" sites where people have submitted incorrect information or transcribed information into index format does not agree with the actual document. Genforum, as it stands now, is a fantastic place to meet up with long lost cousins or meet distant cousins that you never knew existed. From these rekindled relationships in private emailings or snail mail, you begin building a strong family tree, combining those pictures, Bibles, awards, certificates, recollections, etc. that seem to be separated among children when a parent dies.
