I am descended from whichever John Key married Agnes/Agathe Witt in 1750 in Albemarle Co. Va.Their oldest child, John Waller/Walter Key moved to Franklin County GA. in the 1780s, and he died there in 1827.My G-G-G-grandfather Tolbert/Talbird Key married first Elizabeth Embry, daughter of John Embry, and I am descended from their daughter Elizabeth.
I trust the record and research of Dr. Marcus Key back in he 1950s on this score. The land records from the Key property in VA show Wallers among the neighboring landowners, and John Waller/Walter Key's signature appears , I understand, as John "Waller" on documents, which were wrongly copied as "Walter" in the 1950s in Franklin County's early records which were typed and sent to the Ga. State Archives. That same mistake was made in Meriwether County when the marriage records were mistyped and the marriage of Elijah Vernon Chapman and Elizabeth Key mispelled her name as "Rey", and has caused my family to be left out of numerous Key family records.
So while which John Key I am descended from may be a mystery, I feel that my ancestor was named John Waller Key.It may have been out of regard for the neighboring family of Wallers (The Wallers were a prominent family), or some actual kinship with the Waller family.Like others, I would like to know, but have no further info.
