Hi Vikky!
County clerks in the 1600s and 1700s could read and write
but not to the extent that we would expect today. Spelling
was often done phonetically and that is the case with the
spelling of my name when you see Guttery, Guthrey, etc.
John Guthrie came to Jamestown, VA. in 1652 and settled in
York Co. The area of York Co. in which he settled later
became Middlesex and King & Queen Cos., VA. This Robert you
mentioned would have to be a kinsman to me. Three sons of
John Guthrie III came to Orange Co., NC in the 1760s from
Middlesex Co., VA., the portion of Orange Co. that later
became Person & Caswell Cos., NC. I suspect that Robert
Guthrie would have been a child of John Guthrie Jr., an
uncle to the three Guthries who came to Orange Co. I am
going to pass this information to a researcher who has a
better understanding of the Guthrie descent than I do.
Thanks for bringing this information about the Wilburns to
my attention.
