In Reply to: Mary COX (c1740-1816), wife of Thomas WALLING/WALLEN, was not a Cherokee by Charles Ward of 1121

I wish to provide references to items mentioned in my posting regarding Mary (Cox) Walling.

Chrisman Family Bible Record: Transcribed 5 Jan 1920 by Miss Tennie Carpenter from a Bible in the possession of William Fletcher Carpenter, a grandson of Jane (Chrisman) Cecil, herself a granddaughter of Mary (Cox) Walling. The Bible was published 1785 by Alexander Kincaid in Edinburgh, Scotland. Among the entries include the following:

"Mary Walling Mother of Judy Chrisman departed this life the 16th day of August 1816 aged 76 years Daughter of Stephen and Judith Cox of Cumberland County in Virginia"

HALIFAX CO., VA DEED BOOKS 2-6 (1759-1767)
Abstracted and Compiled by Marian Dodson Chiarito
p. 23 of book
p. 274 of the deed book itself
power of attorney for JONATHAN WOODSON granted to Waters Dunn. The witnesses were David Haley, William Cox, and Thomas Wallings.
Recorded 21 Aug 1766

Thomas Walling signed with his mark.
Stephen and Judith (Woodson) Cox had a son, William Cox, so it would appear likely the William Cox in the power-of-attorney was their son, and thus the brother-in-law of Thomas Walling. It's not certain how long William Cox may have resided in the Halifax Co., VA area.

CUMBERLAND CO., VA WILL BOOK 1, p. 165 (dated 12 Jun 1758)
Will of Stephen Cox, Jr. (son of Stephen Cox and Judith Woodson), mentions
"loving brother William Cox"
"loving sister Elizabeth Clement"
"mother Judith Cox"
"brother Josiah Cox"
"four youngest sisters Sarah, Mary, Tabitha, and Martha Cox"

Anyone desirous of a history of the Cox family should consult ADVENTURERS OF PURSE AND PERSON, volume 3, edited by John Frederick Dorman, pp. 211-214, which has a sketch of the Cox family, including a brief mention of Stephen and Judith (Woodson) Cox.
