WALLEN and ELY family Warren co OH
Posted by: Sue Ellen Cave Ash Date: December 18, 2001 at 07:32:53
  of 1121

I’m posting a little of what I have in my data on Wallen/Wallin in regards to Elisha Wallen/Wallin being the father of my Margaret Wallin. So far all I have is "maybe", and
"probably" in this line. I have not been able to find proof of Margaret Wallin or William Ely’s parents. This is what I think is possible due to locations of families in Ohio, Tennessee and Kentucky. Also the naming patterns of the children and grandchildren.
IS Margaret the Lucy Wallen listed as child of Elisha and Anne?? Is she the Lucy
with her father in the 1850 Census, there caring for him…and listed with him on census
as well as with William and her children in their home nearby?

Elisha was called out at age 16 in Washington Co, VA to act as an Indian spy,
guard, ranger on the frontier. His uncle John Wallen also served. He served
under Capt James Gibson in Colonel Arthur Campbells Regiment. His final
application was again rejected in 1851, as then it was still not a recognized
military unit. He had served for five years. After the war Elisha returned home
then settled near the Rocky Station, remained there for four or five years.
Location: Rt 58 in Lee Co VA just east of the bridge over Powell River, near
Rock Bottom Ford. By the 1840 Census they were in Warren county OH.
Elisha and wife Anne Wallen are buried in the Carson/Keller cemetery off the Rd
#132 - 1 1/4 miles east of Pleasant Plain, Harlan county OH. It was known as the
Hill cemetery at the time of burial. To reach the cemetery one must walk across
a plowed field to the lovely wooded cemetery. Many stones remain here. Visited
in 1994, 1996. SEA. This cemetery was overgrown and rediscovered in 1976. That
year Elisha was honoured with a flag on Memorial day and has been every year
since then.

*The old stones were large flat field stones and most of the writing is now gone. The
writing was hand craved into the stones. These were very early readings taken by cemetery

flat on the ground.

Mrs J. L. ELY
Funeral services for Mrs John L. Ely who passed peacefully at the home of her daughter, Mrs Clara Whiteside, at Whitewater, October 13, 1921 were held Sunday afternoon. A short service conducted by Rev Steinberg, (Reformed church) was held at the Whiteside home at one oclock. The funeral party then went to Greenwood cemetery at Newton where a brief service was conducted by Rev J. E. Henshaw and the Womens' Relief Corps had charge of the burial service.
The large attendance and the many tokens expressed in floral offerings, bespoke the high esteem in which Mrs Ely had long been held.

Elizabeth HITESMAN was born June 9, 1829, Forks township, Northampton, county, Penn. In 1837, she with her parents moved to Warren county OHIO.
On March 30, 1853, she was united in marriage to John L ELY. To this union seven children were born, all of whom are living: Horace ELY, and Geroge ELY

In 1884, they purchased a farm in Richland township, Harvey county, and resided there until 1887, when owing to the failing health of her husband, the farm was sold and they moved to Newton. After the death of her husband on September 9, 1907, Mrs Ely continued to maintain her home on East Second Street, Newton, until March 1911, when she made her home with her youngest daughter, Clara Whiteside, until her death.

Mrs ELY was a noble woman, with a loving home and friends. Quiet and undemonstrative in her ministrations, she endeared herself to those whom she came in closest contact.
