Hi Ron,
I would like to know what documentation you are speaking of, because I just searched each name you gave me in the Dawes records, and no one with those names are in those records. In the US Census I do find Shade and wife Artie in the 1910, both listed as white and being born in Tennessee.
I will forward your post to professional Cherokee researchers and see what they can find, but so far, there is no Cherokee documents for this person.
One did not have to be Cherokee to be appointed Chief by the President. One did have to be Cherokee to be elected by the Cherokee people, and those voters must be Cherokee Citizens as well...
I will let you know what some of the Cherokee experts say on this... they have access to a few more records than I do because they are there in Tahlequah, OK where the Cherokee Nation is at.
