This business of "Indian Blood" is fairly new.I have been beseiged by relatives who want me to find grgrandma, Statirah Wallen's, Native American connection, because it offers certain financial advantages.I have searched for years can find no documentation showing an "Indian" connection.
The really strange thing, though, is that several of her relatives ARE on certain tribal roles. Her cousin, Shade Wallen, was, at one time, chairman of the "Five Civilized Tribes," and is on the Cherokee role. His brother, Edward, applied and was turned away.Odd.Neither had any known Native American ancestors.
My grgrgrandfather, Abraham Lunsford, mother of Alabama Lunsford Couch, my greatgrandmother, had several sons. Two of them are on the 1900 OT census, living next door to one another, and one family is identified as "white," while the brother's family are "Indian. The son of one of the brothers, a veteran of WW I, was written about in a Tulsa, OK, newpaper, as "Full Blood Cherokee.None of the family had any documented connection with a native American ancestor.
I have researched both these families several generations before the individuals mentioned, and have discovered not one Native American.
It seems that speaking of "Indian Blood, even when considering some who are actually on tribal roles, can be very misleading.
