Josiah C. (or "O") Wallis, Lucinda Ford, and Wallaces of Tishomingo Co., Miss.
Josiah C. (or maybe 'O') Wallace/Wallis was born around 1840. he lived in Booneville, Mississippi, where he met his wife-to-be, Lucinda Ford. At that time Booneville's county was called Tishomingo. Later the county lines were restructured so that by 1870 Booneville was considered to be part Of Prentiss County. This places the family in the northeast corner of Mississippi, with Tennessee not far to the north and Alabama not far to the east.
Lucinda was the daughter of William and Rachel Ford according to the 1850 census records of Tishomingo County, Mississippi. The Ford family had moved to Miss. from South Carolina in the 1840's as determined by the birthplaces given for their children on the 1850 census records. The youngest child on this census was four year old James w. Ford. Several of Lucinda's sisters also married wWllaces.
Josiah Wallace and Lucinda Ford were married 22 Nov 1860 in Tippah Co., Miss. Tippah Co. was the nieghboring county to the west of Tishomingo in 1860.
On March 4, 1862, Josiah and Lucinda were blessed with a son, born in Booneville, Miss., and they named him William Oliver Wallace. They called him Ollie.
Josiah died or disappeared near the town of Thebes or McClure, in present day alexander County, just southeast of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, during the Civil War. The family story is that around 1864 Lucinda and son Ollie travelled from Booneville to Mounds, Illinois, to look for Josiah's grave at the national cemetery there. They could not find the grave or Josiah. They stayed the winter. They were friends with the Crain family there, or maybe even related to the Crains. Lucinda ended up marrying E.E. Wilburn Feb. 10, 1865. Children may have been born to this union. This whole family except for Ollie did when an epidemic went through the area around 1875. Ollie was left an orphan at the age of 13. He then lived with the Crain family and they raised him as their son. There was a Wallace family living in the same county (Pulaski Co., Illinois) during the 1850's. I wonder of they were related? This family on the 1850 census was R. B. Wallace, born 1820 in North Carolina, wife Mary A., born 1832 in North Carolina, and a baby daughter, Mary J., 8 months old, born in Illinois.
Years later William Oliver "Ollie" Wallace married Adena "Litty" Bour on Oct. 2, 1889 In Illinois. William "Ollie" Wallace and Adena had 6 children of which three had red hair. To this day the red hair has been passed down through the generations. It is not known whether the gene came through the Wallace side or the Bour side. their children were Charley b. 1890, Joseph b. 1894, Anton b. 1897, Lois Louise b. 1901, Caroline b. 1905, and William Oliver II b. 1908.
The Wallace/Wallis-Ford connection is very extensive. five of the children of William and Rachel Ford married Wallaces. Two of their daughters were married to the same Wallace after the first wife, the one Ford daughter, died. James M. Ford married NancyA. Wallis, Brantly Wallis married Mary Ford and Harriet Ford. Tillman Ford married Sarah J. Wallis, and Lucinda Ford married Josiah Wallace.
Can anyone tell me who the parents of Josiah Wallace are? Some researchers are guessing that he was the son of Rebecca Wallace, unmarried daughter of Josiah and Sarah Hobson Wallis. Any information would be greatly [email protected]
