My Family also has those rumors of Indian blood. We are all from Iowa.
One oral history story goes that my Grandfather, James Michael Wallace, was a marshall during the land rush of Oklahoma. He lived in the prairie and married an indian woman by name of Mary Caon. She died, and he road a bicycle to NY, took a boat to the land of his father, along the Blackwater River in Cork, near Millstreet.Rode his bicycle around for 17 days, met Ellen Josephine Denahy of Banteer, near Millstreet.Ellen had a ticket for Australia, but when James proposed to take her to America, she gave this ticket to her sister.
Her sister met an Irish man named McDonnel, and she stayed in Ireland, giving the ticket to her other sister. The other sister went to Ireland; Ellen married in Cork City and they came to America, becoming my Grandmother.
Second story has it that someone a generation before James and Ellen, which would make it my G Grandmother's mother was part Indian. My G Grandmother's maiden name was Ann Conklin her mother's maiden name was Ackley. She is rumored to be part Indian.
We have never tracked it down. The stories are all true, but we are not sure where the Indian comes from.
Maybe all families have those rumors of Indian blood, but in my family the story permeates and it goes back as far as I can remember.
