I looked at what I had found again. The Battle of Sark was fought in October 1448. Soooo this could NOT have beed the John Wallace who married Catherine Douglas.
Looking back up the tree a little is a John Wallace b. ca 1390 who married Elizabeth Cathcart. This John was know as the "Good Laird" and is of an age (58) that makes him a prime candidate for being the "Hero of Sark"
He is referred to as "Wallace of Craige" so we know that this is the right family at least. Also he suffered a mortal wound in the battle and died of it later.
Also from Wikipedia:
After William Wallace, the Anglo-Scottish Border Wars:
During the centuries that followed, the Wallace family continued to leave its marks, cultural and political, on Scotland and on Europe. In the 15th century, General John Wallace commanded Scotland's armies to victory over England at the Battle of Sark. Among those who joined him were the forces of George Douglas from the powerful Douglas family.
(This shows that "Wallace of Craige" is "General John Wallace"
