One or the other of the two known brothers of Sir William Wallace, sons of Sir Alan Wallace, either Malcolm Wallace or John Wallace, may have had another given name, the saint's name of "Cuthbert". It is stated in an autobiography called "I Remember"(1930) by Opie Pope Read, restated in two more biographies (M. Elfer 1940 and R. L. Morris 1965) which mention his Read/Wallace family, and in a few articles which mention Mr. Read's heritage that his mother's father "Squire (William) Wallace was a direct descendant of Cuthbert, the brother of Sir William Wallace. The parents of 11 children all born Nashville, Davidson Co. TN, William Benjamin Read, being the oldest b. 1829 and Opie being the youngest b. 1852, were Guilford Dudley Read b. 1803 NC who m. 1826 Nashville, Elizabeth Wallace b. 1812 TN.Elizabeth had an older sister Harriet A. Wallace b. 1804 NC who married Guilford's older brother David Benjamin Read b. 1799 NC in 1823 Nashville.Father of the Wallace women was William Wallace b. abt. 1784 NC and d. 1825 Nashville, TN. One biography lists his name as James and his wife's as Lydia Wallace, but court documents including will and estate records give it as William. He also had 3 sons:Benjamin Redford Brown Wallace b.1808 NC d.1849 Nashville, TN; John Mourning Wallace b.1814 TN d. 1886 AR; and William Wilkins Wallace b.1817 TN d. 1892 MS.
Guilford and Elizabeth (Wallace) Read are my 3rd great grandparents. William Benjamin Read is my grt. grt. grandfather.
