I'd don't know if this will help, but my great- great-grandfather, John Wall, came from Kilkenny in 1847. He came to the US with two sisters (Mary & ???). John first settled in Cleveland, Ohio, where he met my great- great-grandmother, and after an accident while working as a longshoreman, he and his wife moved to Wisconsin to start a farm. It has always been spectulated that John left Ireland because of the famine, but I never knew if any siblings or cousins remained. The details of his birth are skecthy at best. Some accounts say he was born in 1818, another says when he died in 1880, he was 50 years old.
Maybe John is an uncle or cousin to your husband's great grandfather?
I have been to the Library of Congress in Wash DC a couple of times but cannot find anything decent about Kilkenny during the first half of the 19th cent.
