From reading the letter, it had to have been written after the 1870's as the author relates events he witnessed up till then.

After re-reading the letter, I don't think the author was calling Bobbie Walkup Jewish. I found that there was a famous sermon in 1872 by John Wesley that addressed the subject found in the Bible in John 1:47.
