Hi Deborah, Can I ask , do you still live in the Midlands ? Is your sister Valerie, the lady that writes the educational books? To your question, the 1881 census was a census filled up every 10 years (we had one recently) generally from 1841 on. In our library we have the 1881 census on micro fiche for all over England. If your grandfather was born before 1881 it would have given the name of his parents, ages, occupation, ages, where born, and children.terrific amount of info. I could look up his birth at our library for the right date.? Then if you wanted to send for the certificate it will take you back further with details. Do you know the age of his youngest child, they would have married soon after that. Hope this helps. Good hunting Joyce
