Father of John Sehorn or Seahorn Walker
Posted by: Brian Walker (ID *****9407) Date: September 27, 2009 at 04:43:04
  of 27736

I just know that I am going to open up a nasty can of worms here but I have found possible new information on the father of John Sehorn Walker. born 1815 Overton County, Tennessee, moved to Washington County, Arkansas about 1837 is found in Van Buren Conway County, Arkansas in 1840 and by the 1850 census he is listed in Carroll County, Arkansas.

I have researched this man and have documents from NARA on this family and anyone who contacts me I will send them a copy of the proof of information listed here so that there is full disclosure for all, and you will see what I see. I know how easy it is to make a claim with no evidence and this can lead you for many years on a wild goose chase and many wasted years of research and financial expense for this reason I give full disclosure to my notes and have no interest in publishing at this point my findings.

I have seen many claims about John Sehorn Walker being the son of Benjamin Walker b. 1791 NC son of Jesse Walker & Delilah West . I held this as being true as many others until I gathered more information from the National Archives and stumbled across the file on the son of John Sehorn Walker, James G Walker who made claim for Indian Citizenship of the Cherokee Nation and stated that his Grandfather was Joe or Joel Walker and his Grandmother was Emily! James G Walker was born in 1840 and raised all of his life in Carroll County, Arkansas. If Benjamin Walker were the Grandfather of James G Walker I believe that it is safe to say that James would have known him as Benjamin Died in Carroll County in 1859 when James would have been about 19.

To the contrary James states that he never knew his grandfather personally and that he knew of him but had never met! In 1840 there was a Joel Walker who was old enough to be the father Of John Sehorn Walker found in Conway county, in the settlement of Point Remove, this Joel Walker left the area for Texas about 1845. James G Walker would have been about 5. Could this be the Joel that James mentioned? I further traced this Joel Walker back to McNairy County, Tennessee this Joel Walker was born in 1794 in TN he had a daughter named Delilah b.1825 who married a Thomas O Jones in 1844 in point Remove , Conway County, Arkansas. His daughter Mary Ann Walker was born 1814 in McNairy County TN. Please see notes below and keep an open mind to the possibility that more research needs to be done here……….

The information on the 1850 census above is not proven to be the same Joel Walker in Arkansas in 1840, nor is this Joel proven to be the one that James G Walker son of John Sehorn Walker, spoke of as being his grandfather or Indian Joe Or Joel. I only submit this Joel as a very likely subject due to his proximity and the statements made by James G Walker on the claims application for Indian rights taken in 1902. With the statements made by James G Walker stating he never knew his grandfather and the fact that Benjamin Walker said to be his grandfather died in abt 1859 in Carroll county make it impossible that Benjamin was the father of John Sehorn Walker................................................

The Joel listed above on the 1850 census had daughter Delila Walker who was born in 1825 TN and married one Thomas O Jones in Conway county Arkansas, about 1844 and had son William J Jones born in 1845 in Arkansas. This information needs a much closer look and I believe that the Benjamin Walker who is said to be the father of John Sehorn Walker needs to be excluded

       3       ii.       Male Walker, born Bet. 1811 - 1820.

Generation No. 2

       2. John Sehorn2 Walker (Joe Or Joel1) was born 1815 in Overton County, Tennessee, and died 26 Jul 1895 in Berryville, Carroll County, Arkansas. He married (1) Sarah A Unknown 1839 in Likely Washington County, Arkansas. She was born 1818 in Overton, Tennessee, and died 04 Jul 1871 in Berryville, Carroll County, Arkansas. He married (2) L Polly Hurley 08 Feb 1874 in Carroll County, Arkansas. She was born 1840 in Arkansas.

Notes for John Sehorn Walker:
This John S Walker is reported to be the son Of a Benjamin Walker from Overton County Tennessee. The middle initial is said to stand for Sehorn. I doubt that this information as to his relationship to Benjamin Walker born abt 1790, is accurate due to the statements given by John Sehorn Walkers's son James G Walker in 1907. He states when applying for Indian rights, To the claims division of the Eastern Band of Cherokees, that his Grand father was Joe or Joel Walker and grandmother was Emily. He states he did not know them, and If Benjamin Walker were his Grandfather he would have known him as he died when James was 19 in Arkansas.

I have read all of the papers from the various children and all claim the same story and that is that their grandfathers was a Joe or Joel Walker. there was a Joel Walker who shows up in Conway county Arkansas in 1840 who is old enough to be this Joe or Joel Walker. John Sehorn Walker was in conway county in 1840 as well. I would bet that this is the father of John S Walker. also note John claims that his father in the 1880 census was born in Tennessee his mother as well.

John Sehorn Walker arrived in Arkansas about 1836-37 and is first found in Washington County and by 1840 he is found in Conway County, in the township of Van Buren. The name Sehorn is confirmed by his sons in their application for Cherokee citizenship.

Statements made by James G Walker would go to prove that Benjamin Walker is not the father of John Sehorn Walker as he claims that his grandfathers name was Joe Walker and grandmother was Emily Walker. He further states that he did not know them but was told they lived in North Carolina and in Georgia last he had heard. Benjamin Walker who is said to be the father of John Sehorn Walker died in 1859 in Carroll County, Arkansas and this would have been when James G Walker was 19 he would have known his grandfather.

Also Note that there are those who claim that this same Benjamin Walker is the son of Jesse Walker and Delila West who are my family members. I believe that Benjamin Walker and this John Sehorn Walker may be related, but this information blows holes in the assumption that Jesse Walker and Delila West are the father of this Benjamin Walker......................
